What is the difference between a CT and PT meter?

Current Transformer (CT) Meter:

  2. Usage: Used to step down high currents to a lower, more manageable level for metering and protection purposes.

Potential Transformer (PT) Meter:

  1. Purpose: Measures electrical voltage.
  2. Usage: Used to step down high voltages to a lower, safer level for metering and protection purposes.
  3. Application: Typically used in high voltage systems where direct voltage measurement is impractical or unsafe.
  4. Construction: Consists of a primary winding (connected to the high voltage) and a secondary winding (where the voltage is reduced proportionally).
  5. Output: Provides a voltage that is proportional to the measured voltage but scaled down to a safer level.
  6. Accuracy: Designed to provide accurate voltage readings within the operational range.


Key Differences:

  • Measurement Focus: CT meters measure current, while PT meters measure voltage.
  • Application: CT meters are used in high current scenarios, whereas PT meters are used in high voltage scenarios.
