How is Contact Resistance Measured?


Contact resistance is measured using a contact resistance tester, an essential tool for ensuring the reliability of electrical connections. The process involves the following steps:

  1. Preparation: Ensure that the contact surfaces are clean and free of contaminants to avoid inaccurate readings.

  2. Connection: Connect the tester probes to the contacts or joints that need to be tested. Properly secure the connections to avoid loose or unstable contacts during testing.

  3. Current Injection: The tester injects a specific, constant current through the contacts. The current values are typically high, ranging from 1A to several hundred amperes, depending on the tester's capabilities and the application.

  4. Voltage Measurement: The tester measures the voltage drop across the contact points. High-precision instruments ensure that even small voltage drops are accurately captured.

  5. Calculation: The tester calculates the contact resistance using Ohm’s Law (R = V/I), where R is resistance, V is the measured voltage, and I is the injected current.

  6. Data Analysis: The results are displayed on the tester’s screen. Advanced testers may also store the data for further analysis or output results to a computer for detailed evaluation.

  7. Evaluation: Compare the measured resistance values against standard acceptable limits. High contact resistance indicates potential issues such as oxidation, corrosion, or mechanical wear, which may necessitate maintenance or replacement of the contacts.
